Football & Fields: available light (Americana Series)

This is the last set in our 2009 Fall Americana Series.
I want to focus on the use of available light in these images. No strobes were used to create these. And many times it's easier to shoot children this way because they move around so much.

As I shot these brothers together, playing, moving or just standing still for a quick moment, the sun played on each image differently, sometimes creating a different look in the same setting by just the turn of their head. As you look through these, watch how the sun interacts with the subject as they move in different directions.

p.s. on a side note, although you'll see candid moving shots throughout, in this particular shoot the older boy was very much aware of being in front of a camera, and when standing still looked more posed than I normally try to have my subjects look. But Because we was comfortable with his body, and knew how to shift his weight and stand, I still feel those images look beautiful on their own, so I included them. Every client is different. And in his case, he looked very candid moving, it was just a greater contrast between the two settings than I sometimes have. As photographers, we mustn't look at this as a bad thing, but rather a chance to understand all types of clients and how best to blend our unique style with their personality.

much love,

cupcakes & radio flyers (Americana Series)

This is our second showcase of images in our "Americana Series". This time we're taking you back to a simpler time of neighborhood cupcakes, and radio flyers. Inspired, in part, from the great "town-life" painter Norman Rockwell, we hope to show that though times have changed, family love is still as amazing as ever.

let's remember to feel the love, while we share the love.

wishing you well,
-TJ

eden of the gray (americana series)

I like to parallel children to weather. Sometimes, they're like a soft breeze against your skin, softly blowing the smell of wisteria across your nose and invigorating the senses. And at other times, they're like a dark sky with cracks of thunder and violent winds throwing the rain sideways, so that no matter which way the umbrella turns you're going to end up wet.

The day we shot Will, Allison and Eden, was warm, quiet and clear. The sun was headed toward its sleep, giving the atmosphere that soft "magic hour" glow; one of the many kind mercies from God we take for granted.

Equipped with great outfits, old world and literary accessories, and another beautiful dresser from Knack Studios, we created some amazing imagery reminiscent of another time. This and several future posts have a similar thread I've named the "Americana Series".

I'm excited about the many possibilities that are open to us in the winter months.
If you and you family would like to capture the essence of where you are today, as you move into tomorrow, please give us a call. We'd love the chance to work with you!
